A tragic industrial explosion occurred at the I. Schumann & Co.’s industrial plant on Monday, February 20, 2023. The devastating accident resulted in the death of one worker and serious injuries to over a dozen other employees.
What Caused the Cleveland Area Explosion?
Although the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined, authorities are doing everything they can to investigate the cause of the explosion. Fire officials have indicated the explosion most likely occurred in the plant’s foundry, where molten metals are kept in kettles.
The Fire Marshal’s office states the blast does not appear to have been caused by a criminal act.
What Was I. Schumann’s Safety History Before the Explosion?
Although little is as yet known about the cause of the explosion, unfortunately, this isn’t the first time serious accidents have occurred at the site. An explosion in 2006 left five workers injured, while in 2019, an employee suffered third-degree burns after the metal he was working with caught his clothing on fire due to not wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
According to CBS News and NPR, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has repeatedly cited this company for safety violations in the past decade. Moreover, in 2022, the alloy plant paid fines for 11 violations pertaining to the storage and disposal of hazardous waste.
What Injuries Occurred Due to the Cleveland Explosion?
We extend our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of Steve Mullins, whom news outlets have reported perished in the blast, as well as all those injured in this horrific incident. Reports state 13 other employees were wounded due to the accident.
We are grateful that seven of the injured workers had been discharged from medical care by Tuesday, February 21. However, 2 of the wounded remain in critical condition.

The explosion rocked the Bedford, Ohio community around 2:20 pm on Monday, February 20, 2023. Pictures and video posts show debris strewn for hundreds of yards around the facility.
