Leading the Future of Florida Law: David Thompson and The Florida Bar Leadership Academy

Personal Injury Attorney David Thompson serving on Florida Bar Leadership Academy Committee

Leadership in the legal profession is characterized by service, integrity, and a commitment to strengthening the community for those who follow. That commitment is why Farah & Farah is proud to highlight the work of trial attorney David Thompson and his strategic role in shaping The Florida Bar Leadership Academy.

As a member of the Florida Bar Leadership Academy Committee, David Thompson serves as a key ambassador and recruiter for the program. As a Jacksonville personal injury trial attorney, he is the leading voice urging Northeast Florida’s legal talent to step into statewide roles. Read on to see how his committee work helps guide one of Florida’s most respected programs and prepares the next generation of Bar leaders.

What Is The Florida Bar Leadership Academy?

Now in its fourteenth year, The Florida Bar Leadership Academy is a selective, multisession program that brings together a diverse group of attorneys from across the state. Participants, known as academy fellows, complete a one-year curriculum focused on leadership development, professionalism, and service.

The Academy is designed to respect the schedule of a practicing attorney. Fellows attend seven required sessions over the course of the year, totaling approximately fourteen business days.

Importantly, these sessions do double duty: the time spent in the program qualifies for Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits. This allows attorneys to satisfy their state-mandated education requirements while simultaneously gaining an in-depth understanding of how The Florida Bar operates and how they can meaningfully contribute to its mission.

A Rare Look Inside the Legal Profession in Florida

What makes the academy truly unique is the level of access it provides. Fellows move beyond the daily grind of the courtroom to engage directly with judges, Bar leaders, and Florida Supreme Court justices in a collaborative setting.

These interactions offer a deeper understanding of the profession’s broader infrastructure, providing a perspective on the high-level responsibilities and decision-making processes that shape the future of Florida law. For a Fellow, this provides a master-level view of how the entire legal ecosystem is governed.

Why Legal Leadership Training Matters Now

The legal profession continues to evolve. New technologies, shifting public expectations, and complex ethical challenges demand thoughtful and prepared leadership. The Leadership Academy addresses these realities by focusing on three central goals: strengthening leadership skills, inspiring service-driven engagement, and preparing attorneys to guide the profession with integrity.

Leadership in The Florida Bar is less about prestige and more about stewardship. Legal leaders like David are serving to protect the profession while helping it grow stronger for future generations.

A Call to the Fourth Judicial Circuit

One of the most critical messages David Thompson continues to champion is the need for greater participation from the Fourth Judicial Circuit, which includes Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties. Historically, this region has been underrepresented in the academy.

That underrepresentation matters. It limits Northeast Florida’s voice in statewide leadership conversations and reduces opportunities for local attorneys to build influential professional relationships. The academy offers Fourth Circuit lawyers a chance to represent their region, share their perspectives, and help shape the direction of Florida law.

Who Should Apply to The Florida Bar Leadership Academy?

The Leadership Academy is open to all Florida Bar members in good standing, regardless of practice area, firm size, or geographic location. The selection process is competitive because the program seeks a highly specific balance of diversity, geography, and practice type to ensure a dynamic environment for its fellows.

While applicants must submit their professional background, a personal statement, and references, the committee evaluates these materials to identify leadership potential and a clear commitment to service. They are looking for attorneys from every corner of the state, from public defenders and solo practitioners to partners at large regional firms, who are ready to shape the future of the legal community.
