Injured Consumers File Lawsuits Against EzriCare

As consumers, staying informed about the products and services we purchase is essential. Unfortunately, EzriCare recently came under fire when several customers reported life-altering injuries resulting from using its products, specifically its eye drops, Artificial Tears. In response, these injured clients have filed lawsuits against EzriCare, seeking legal responsibility for the damages suffered.

What Are EzriCare Artificial Tears?

The CDC Is Investigating Bacteria Found in EzriCare Eye Drops

Due to a breakout of infections of the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa in multiple states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has pursued an investigation into the situation. Shockingly, it was discovered that 85% of people infected with drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa had used EzriCare Artificial Tears between May 17, 2022, to January 19, 2023. Upon further examination through laboratory testing, this rare strain of bacteria was found within opened bottles of EzriCare Artificial Tears – an indication that there is certainly cause for alarm.

In total, ten brands of eye care medicines were investigated by the CDC due to the bacteria outbreak. However, EzriCare Artificial Tears was found to be the most commonly purchased product among those infected.

EzriCare’s Parent Company, Global Pharma Healthcare, Issued a Recall

If you’re concerned about using EzriCare eye drops, you’ll be relieved to know that this product has been recalled. The recall was initiated due to concerns that the product was contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. The FDA and the company that makes the eye drops have encouraged people who have used the product to seek medical attention if they experience any symptoms of infection.

What Has the FDA Done About EzriCare’s Contaminated Products?

In February of this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reprimanded Global Pharma Healthcare, the parent company of EzriCare, for failing to perform appropriate microbial testing on their eye product, Artificial Tears. As a result, Global Pharma recalled another drug: Delsam Pharma Artificial Eye Ointment. Additionally, The FDA discovered that proper tamper-evident packaging had not been used during distribution, nor were there adequate preservatives included in the drugs.

Have Any Other Eye Drop Products Been Recalled?

One month after the recalls made by Global Pharma HealthCare, the FDA added two additional eye drop products to its recall list due to potential sterility complications. Not following necessary sterile manufacturing protocols can lead to serious eye infections or even cause vision loss.

Apotex’s Brimonidine Tartrate Ophthalmic Solution (0.15%)

Apotex recalled six lots of Brimonidine Tartrate Ophthalmic Solution 0.15%, a prescription eye drop used to treat glaucoma, due to cracks in their bottle caps detected by the FDA. The drops were sold nationwide from April 2020 through February 2021 and manufactured in Canada. There are currently no reports of injury.

Pharmedica’s Purely Soothing 15% MSM Drops

Pharmedica recently announced the recall of two lots of Purely Soothing 15% MSM Drops due to potential problems which could lead to blindness. The over-the-counter drops are intended for treating eye irritation and were manufactured in Phoenix, Arizona. Approximately 2,900 bottles have been impacted by the recall.

What Can You Do to Stay Safe From Contaminated Products?

According to a report from the New York Times, approximately 117 million Americans use eye drops annually, and generally, the products are safe to use. However, if you notice symptoms of an eye infection, such as discharge from the eye, redness, or pain in your eye or eyelid, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Consumers deserve to trust the products they purchase and use. Unfortunately, EzriCare has caused harm to many due to its negligence.

While recalls like this can be alarming, they are an important reminder of how seriously all manufacturers must take the safety of their products. If you want to stay informed, be sure to check the FDA’s website for recall updates.
