Lipitor / Statins

Statins are a type of drug that lowers cholesterol by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that makes cholesterol in the liver. One of the most popular statin drugs on the market is Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium). When used along with a low-fat diet, Lipitor and other statins have been known to reduce the risk of stroke, heart attacks, and chest pain. Many patients who use Lipitor, however, are at risk of serious side effects, such as the development of Type 2 diabetes.

If you believe that you or someone you love has suffered a dangerous side effect of Lipitor, it is important to consult with an injury attorney. At Farah & Farah, our legal team has the resources and skills to take on negligent pharmaceutical companies in order to ensure that our clients receive justice and fair compensation for their losses.

Lipitor Statistics

The news that Lipitor has serious side effects is significant because statins are extremely popular and many people could be at risk. In recent years, 50 percent of all men aged 65 to 74 and 39 percent of all women ages 75 and older were taking statin drugs, such as Lipitor, Crestor, and Zocor. About one in four Americans over the age of 45 were prescribed statins in the year 2008. That means that more than 30 million Americans aged 45 and older were taking Lipitor or similar medications that year.

Lipitor Side Effects

In February 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Lipitor, to update the warning label on all Lipitor prescriptions. Now, consumers are warned that the drug may cause Type 2 diabetes. The previous Lipitor warnings failed to properly inform consumers and medical professionals about the importance of monitoring blood glucose levels. A number of consumers now struggle with diabetes because of this failure to inform.

Some of the serious side effects associated with Lipitor and other statins include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Dark urine
  • Muscle problems
  • Jaundice
  • Liver damage
  • Kidney damage

Allegations Against Lipitor

There have been many different lawsuits filed against Pfizer for the way they marketed Lipitor and for the many side effects that result from taking statins. Some of the most common allegations raised in lawsuits against Lipitor include:

  • Pfizer was aware, or should have been aware, that Lipitor causes Type 2 diabetes and increased blood glucose levels. Despite this knowledge, they marketed the drug as safe.
  • Lipitor is defective because the warning label was inadequate.
  • If proper warnings were provided, individuals who now have diabetes could have prevented it by avoiding the drug.
  • Pfizer was deceitful in the way it marketed and promoted the use of Lipitor.

Lipitor Attorneys Protecting the Rights of Injured Victims

A successful claim can result in financial compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other related damages.
