St. Augustine Cyclist Killed in Hit-And-Run Crash
A St. Augustine man is dead after he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in St. Johns County. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers said the 43-year-old man was pedaling home after working a night shift at a local IHOP and was heading east on State Road 16 when a vehicle attempting to turn right on to Four Mile Road struck him.
FHP reports that the victim was in the bike lane when he was struck.
The cyclist was rushed to Flagler Hospital, but was airlifted to UF Health Jacksonville for more extensive treatment. He died the next morning.
FHP is still looking for the driver of the vehicle and anybody who may have information about the accident is urged to call the St. John’s Sheriff’s office. This is the third hit-and-run bicyclist death in St. Johns County this year.
The director of Velofest, a local cycling group, expressed outrage at the latest hit-and-run of a cyclist in the area. She told WOKV FM that this had been the sixth cyclist hit by a motorist in St. Johns County in the span of one week.
“Unfortunately, it’s happening so frequently right now that I’m getting more angry than I am sad because we need to get to the bottom of why it’s happening, “ she stated.
The cycling advocacy group met with local engineers, law enforcement, and Florida Department of Transportation representatives at a St. Johns Traffic Safety meeting to discuss a plan of action to curb the deaths and injuries to cyclists on local roads.
