How Do Social Security Disability Benefits Work in Athens?

Social Security Disability Insurance helps those unable to work because of an injury or disability by providing monthly payments and Medicare eligibility. To qualify for SSDI, you must have an eligible disability and a long enough work history.

In addition, Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a needs-based program available to people with disabilities, but you must have limited income and resources to qualify. While you can receive benefits from both the SSDI and SSI programs, your combined payment cannot exceed the monthly SSI maximum, which is $994 per month in 2026 for an individual.

Understanding the difference between SSDI and SSI can save you some time and stress during the application process. If you have significant income, savings, or assets, you will most likely be eligible for SSDI and not SSI. SSDI can also provide much higher monthly payments, depending on your circumstances.

Common Conditions That Qualify for SSDI

A variety of physical, mental, and chronic conditions can qualify for SSDI. While some conditions are considered serious enough that a diagnosis alone is sufficient to qualify, others require proper medical documentation and proof of severe impacts on your ability to work.

Some commonly eligible disabling conditions include the following:

  • Blindness
  • Cancers
  • Depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses
  • Heart conditions
  • Back, neck, and spine problems
  • Arthritis
  • Neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease
  • Respiratory issues like severe asthma
We're dedicated to recovering the compensation you deserve.

Eligibility Requirements for Social Security Disability Claims in Athens, GA

To qualify for SSDI benefits in Athens, you’ll need to meet several different criteria. Some of the most important eligibility requirements include:

Work History

You must have accrued a certain number of “work credits” depending on the age at which you became disabled. You can earn up to four credits per year. While requirements are more relaxed for those disabled before age 31, those older generally must have earned at least 20 credits in the 10 years directly preceding the disability.

Age

You must be under full retirement age to receive SSDI benefits, which is currently 67.

Duration of Disability

To be eligible for SSDI benefits, your disability must have affected your daily life or ability to work for at least 12 months, whether through mobility impairments, issues with mental processing, or other disruptions.

Income

To meet the Social Security Administration’s definition of a disability, your condition must prevent you from participating in “substantial gainful activity,” or work that provides an income higher than $1,690 a month in 2026.

For SSI, you must also make less than $2,073 a month and own less than $2,000 in assets as an individual, with higher limits for eligible couples. However, some important assets are exempt from the resource requirement, including your home and one family vehicle.

The Social Security Disability Application Process

Not sure where to begin with your Social Security Disability application? Our experienced attorneys can walk you through the process, which generally involves the following steps:

  • Free consultation: Our experienced Athens Social Security Disability lawyers will meet with you to discuss your case.
  • Application: We’ll help you file your initial application with the Social Security Administration, ensuring you submit the right documents and sufficient medical evidence.
  • Review: The SSA will look over your application to see if it contains the correct information, then send your claim to a state agency to review your medical records.
  • Decision: If the SSA finds that you’re eligible for SSDI benefits, it will send you a decision letter. You’ll begin receiving payments in about six months.
  • Appeal: If the SSA denies your claim, our attorneys will help you appeal the decision until you get the outcome you deserve.

How To Deal With Social Security Disability Claim Denials and Appeals

The majority of initial SSDI applications are rejected, most commonly for either technical or medical reasons. If the SSA has denied your claim for a technical reason, it’s likely because there was a mistake on the application that prevented the agency from moving on to the medical review stage. Medical denials take place when you either don’t have enough medical evidence to prove your disability or the SSA believes your condition does not qualify.

If your initial SSDI claim was denied, don’t lose hope. Our knowledgeable Athens Social Security Disability attorneys can help you navigate the multi-step appeals process, including Requests for Reconsideration, administrative law hearings, and Appeals Council reviews. We can even file a lawsuit in federal court if we exhaust all internal appeal options.

Tips for a Successful Athens Social Security Disability Claim

Get Started Quickly

It can take six to eight months to process an SSDI application, and even if yours moves quickly, you cannot receive benefits until five months after the onset of your disability. The faster you file your benefits claim, the sooner you can start receiving payments.

Proving that your disability qualifies is critical to getting approved for SSDI benefits. Fully following your treatment plans, regularly attending doctors’ appointments, and preserving your medical records can both help with your recovery and strengthen your claim.

Many SSDI claims are denied for technical issues, often resulting from small errors or mistakes on your initial application. Double-checking your personal information can save you time and stress by avoiding preventable delays.

Most initial SSDI applications are denied at the initial stage. That doesn’t mean you aren’t eligible for benefits or don’t have a path to approval. Even if you just need to include additional information, there are multiple ways to try again.

Our Social Security Disability attorneys can provide the professional guidance you need to maximize your chances of getting the benefits you deserve. We can help you gather medical evidence, build your initial application, and determine your next steps if you face any roadblocks.
