Parents Are Liable For Underage Drinkers In The Home

Posted on May 29, 2008

As school wraps up in Florida, graduates and their parents are looking forward to the summer, sleeping in, barbeques, pool parties. And no doubt kids are looking forward to a beer, or two or three or ……

Parents beware!

Graduation parties for high school students are fine, but without the alcohol please.

Providing alcohol to underage drinkers is a second-degree misdemeanor. Parents face up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine and neighbors are only too happy to turn you in.

Last year, 17 open-house parties led to arrests. In Clay County there were 23 arrests last year.

Parents are supposed to know better and to take reasonable steps to prevent alcohol from landing in the hands of minors on their property.

If you knew nothing about the party and invitations were sent out online, you’;re liable. And if that minor crashes their car after leaving a party at your house, you’;re liable, not to mention the civil lawsuit that can ensue.

That’;s no way to start your summer.
