Man Killed in Fruit Cove Motorcycle Crash

Posted on December 4, 2015

A 62-year-old man was killed and his 58-year-old female passenger was injured when their motorcycle struck a raised center median. According to a News 4 Jax report, the fatal motorcycle accident happened on Longleaf Pine Parkway north of Roberts Road in Fruit Cove.

Officials say they don’;t yet know why his motorcycle crossed over the center median and entered the southbound lanes. Both the driver and passenger were ejected from the motorcycle. The man died at the scene. The woman is being treated at an area hospital for serious injuries.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcycle accident fatalities have increased in 14 out of the 15 years from 1997 to 2012. Motorcycle fatalities are particularly common in Florida. According to a recent report in the Tampa Tribune, Florida is third in the nation for motorcycle deaths, behind only California and Texas.

People are much more likely to suffer fatal injuries when riding a motorcycle compared to riding in a passenger vehicle. Motorcycles provide much less protection in the event of an accident. They are also more vulnerable to defective parts and dangerous roadway conditions.

When someone gets injured or killed in a Florida motorcycle accident, it must be determined who was responsible, how it could have been prevented, and if negligence was a contributing factor in the accident.
