The Social Security Disability Process
Filing an application for disability benefits is the first step in the Social Security disability claim process. Your application will be submitted with all your medical evidence and supporting documentation for review and approval.
If your initial claim is denied, you have sixty days (60) to file an appeal. Your application will be sent back to the SSA for review and reconsideration.
You also have sixty days (60) from the date of your denied reconsideration to request a hearing. An administrative judge will review your application this time, and either deny, send back or approve your claim. This process can take up to two years (2) to complete.
If the judge’s decision isn’t satisfactory, you can appeal through the Appeals Council. Beyond the council is the Federal District Court, where thirty percent (30%) of appeals are decided in favor of the applicant.
