What Is XARELTO®?
XARELTO® is a brand name of rivaroxaban, which is a type of anticoagulant, or blood thinner, that is used to prevent blood clots. XARELTO® is designed to reduce the risk of blood clots in the body, but it can have some unwanted side effects.
Because it’s meant to stop blood clots from forming, XARELTO® can also cause bleeding to occur when blood clots are specifically needed (as in with cuts or injuries). In some cases, severe complications can occur, including serious internal bleeding, such as gastrointestinal bleeding. Bleeding is common for anticoagulant medications like XARELTO®, but it is a particularly dangerous blood thinner because there’s no known way to reverse the blood-thinning effects.
If you or someone you know has experienced internal bleeding or other complications as a result of taking XARELTO®, don’t wait. Contact us now to get the justice you and your loved ones deserve. The consultation is free and you pay nothing unless your case is successful. Now is the time to hold the pharmaceutical companies responsible for failing to warn patients of the risks.
Who Makes XARELTO®?
XARELTO® was developed and manufactured by Bayer and Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Many patients have sued the producers of XARELTO® because they felt that they weren’t sufficiently warned about the risks of internal bleeding when taking XARELTO®, which led to injury, illness, and death. While advertisements highlighted the fact that XARELTO® did not require blood monitoring, unlike other blood thinners, former patients have argued that this claim exposed them to unnecessary risks.
How Does XARELTO® Work?
XARELTO® is a ‘xaban’ type of anticoagulant, which is also called a direct factor Xa inhibitor. It works by acting upon an enzyme called Factor X, which is a part of the coagulation cascade, or the blood’s process of turning from a liquid into a gel to form blood clots. In order for blood thinners like XARELTO® to work it’s important for the medication to be taken properly to avoid any adverse interactions like injury and discomfort.
XARELTO® Side Effects, Complications, and Risks
As with any medication, there are possible risks and side effects. The more common side effects of XARELTO® (or rivaroxaban) include bruising, nosebleeds, and bleeding from cuts or injuries. These are only signs of more serious side effects if they continue or if they grow worse.
Because XARELTO® is meant to prevent blood clots from forming within the veins, one potential side effect is that it will also prevent blood clots from easily forming to stop injuries from bleeding. Anyone experiencing serious uncontrolled bleeding should inform their doctor as soon as possible of the side effects they are having.
Bowel And Bladder Issues, Including Gastrointestinal Bleeding
In addition to loss of bowel and bladder control, one of the potential risks of using XARELTO® that patients have reported is gastrointestinal bleeding, or bleeding within the stomach and/or intestines. Gastrointestinal bleeding can have disastrous health consequences and can even be fatal.
XARELTO® was designed to help reduce the risk stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), but recent evidence indicates that it may actually increase the risk of stroke in some patients.
Pulmonary Embolism Risks
Although XARELTO® was designed to help prevent blood clots and pulmonary embolism, recent research and patient experiences have shown that use of this medication can actually result in blood clots and pulmonary embolism. Pulmonary embolism can be life-threatening or fatal.
Abnormal Liver Function
Case studies have shown that, among several other severe side effects, XARELTO® can cause abnormal liver function in patients who take it. This hard-working organ handles the functions of processing nutrients, removing toxins from the body, and regulating the body’s metabolism. Damage to the liver can interfere with these important functions, with an adverse effect on general health.
Increased Rates of Wound Infection
Orthopedic surgeons across the United States claim a higher rate of wound bleeding and infection following knee and hip replacement surgery when XARELTO® is administered. A recent study by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) reported a significant increase in deep surgical site infections among patients being treated with this drug. The studies suggested ten times greater risk of infection among hip and knee replacement patients that were treated with Xarelto after surgery.
Allergic Reactions to XARELTO®
Although allergies and skin reactions allergic reactions to XARELTO® aren’t common, they can be serious. If anyone experiences the symptoms of an allergic reaction after taking XARELTO®, they should seek medical attention immediately.
XARELTO®-Related Litigation Against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson
XARELTO® was approved by the FDA in 2011, but has since faced a number of lawsuits from patients who consider the medication to be more dangerous than advertised by the companies that produce it, Bayer and Johnson & Johnson. Plaintiffs claim that the companies failed to adequately warn them of the risks of severe and gastrointestinal bleeding and death.
In 2017, a jury in Philadelphia awarded plaintiffs $28 million dollars, agreeing with the them that Johnson & Johnson and Bayer had failed to adequately warn them of the risks of internal bleeding. This case marked the first loss for the companies, who had won the previous three lawsuits over XARELTO® that had gone to court.
The 2017 win in Philadelphia was only one of the thousands of cases that are still pending against the pharmaceutical companies over XARELTO®. That case was later overturned by a Philadelphia judge in January of 2018. However, there are at least 21,400 cases against Bayer and Johnson & Johnson still to come in both federal and state courts.
