Car Crashes into Jacksonville Retention Pond, Driver Loses Life

Posted on January 11, 2011

A driver was pulled from a retention pond near EverBank field in Jacksonville on Sunday, January 9 and has died from his injuries. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded at about 9:25 a.m. and approximately 8 firefighters pulled the man from his car and took him to Baptist Medical Center where he later died, according to an article in The Florida Times-Union. A witness saw the vehicle in the pond and saw someone wave to him from the car. He called 911 instead of attempting a rescue.

Our condolences go out to everyone who knew and loved this man.

How to Escape a Vehicle in a Retention Pond
There is about two to four minutes from the time your vehicle lands in the water until it sinks to the bottom of the water, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, which recommends carrying a spring-loaded window breaker to smash the driver’;s side window and get out as quickly as possible. There is no way to lower an electric window as they won’;t work when the vehicle is submerged and water will pour in quickly. There are an estimated 4,800 vehicle accidents in Florida every year involving a submerged vehicle in a retention pond, reports the FHP.

If you or a loved one is involved in a tragic accident that ends with a vehicle submerged in a retention pond, there are many questions that an experienced Florida personal injury attorney will want answered. Among them — what caused the vehicle to veer off the road and into the pond? Was a defective vehicle the cause? Did a tire blow or separate? Did the power steering cease working? Was there something that distracted the driver sending him off the road? Until these questions are answered, the question of liability will remain unanswered. The Jacksonville car crash lawyers at Farah & Farah will launch an investigation to get answers and determine if there is an at-fault party that may be responsible for causing the accident and for providing compensation.
