Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Car Accident on State Road 9A
One woman is dead and several others were injured after a three-vehicle crash on State Road 9A south of Baymeadows Road, on early Tuesday morning, April 19. First Coast News reports a wrong-way northbound driver behind the wheel of an SUV caused the crash as he drove in the southbound lane of 9A, first hitting a vehicle with two women and causing it to spin, and then hitting a second vehicle, causing it to roll on its side and catch fire. The two women were trapped in their heavily damaged two-door Scion and the 20-year-old female passenger in the Scion was pronounced dead at Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville while the driver suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the wrong way vehicle, a 28-year-old man from Orlando, was taken to the burn unit at Shands in Gainesville in critical condition. A toxicology screening will determine if drugs or alcohol played any role in this fatal crash. The driver of the third vehicle was taken to Mayo Clinic with injuries.
