Woman Killed in Wrong-Way Car Accident on State Road 9A

Posted on April 22, 2011

One woman is dead and several others were injured after a three-vehicle crash on State Road 9A south of Baymeadows Road, on early Tuesday morning, April 19. First Coast News reports a wrong-way northbound driver behind the wheel of an SUV caused the crash as he drove in the southbound lane of 9A, first hitting a vehicle with two women and causing it to spin, and then hitting a second vehicle, causing it to roll on its side and catch fire. The two women were trapped in their heavily damaged two-door Scion and the 20-year-old female passenger in the Scion was pronounced dead at Shands Medical Center in Jacksonville while the driver suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the wrong way vehicle, a 28-year-old man from Orlando, was taken to the burn unit at Shands in Gainesville in critical condition. A toxicology screening will determine if drugs or alcohol played any role in this fatal crash. The driver of the third vehicle was taken to Mayo Clinic with injuries.

Our condolences are extended to the family and friends of everyone involved in this preventable collision. The FHP says that everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.

A Florida head-on car crash occurs when one vehicle crosses the center line or median and crashes into an oncoming vehicle. A head-on can be the result of a distracted or intoxicated driver, or a deliberate action such as passing a truck. Head-on collisions are the most serious because of the energy involved. Two vehicles going 50 mph equals the force of a 100 mph crash. Serious injuries are known to occur to the head and brain leading to death and/or long-term disability.
