Taxotere and Permanent Hair Loss

Posted on April 14, 2016

The chemotherapy drug Taxotere (docetaxel) is commonly used to treat various types of cancer. While temporary hair loss is a common side effect associated with different types of chemotherapy drugs, Taxotere has been shown to cause permanent hair loss (permanent alopecia). Unfortunately, the drug’s manufacturer, Sanofi-Aventis, only began warning of this side effect on its labeling in the United States in December of 2015. What’s particularly disturbing is that Sanofi-Aventis may have known about this side effect as early as 2005 when the manufacturer issued a warning to the European Medicines Agency regarding permanent hair loss. A similar alert was issued to Health Canada, the Canadian version of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 2012. This means that for a decade, physicians and patients in the U.S. didn’t know that the use of Taxotere could possibly cause permanent hair loss. This is unacceptable because pharmaceutical manufacturers have a duty to adequately test their products and promptly issue warnings whenever a side effect is reported.

If you have been treated with Taxotere and have suffered permanent hair loss, you may be able to pursue compensation from Sanofi-Aventis for any following damages:

• Permanent injury • Disfigurement and scarring • Hedonic damages for loss of joy of life • Mental trauma and emotional duress

Another troubling fact is that there are several similar chemotherapy medications that are just as effective in treating cancer but don’t cause permanent hair loss. Had patients known of this possible side effect, they would, no doubt, have chosen an alternative treatment.
