Important News for Viagra Patients

Posted on September 17, 2016

Viagra, also marketed as Sildenafil, is used to combat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension in millions of patients worldwide. Unfortunately, the drug has been linked to a series of potentially lethal side effects in some patients. Viagra has been studied extensively, and many of these studies have produced alarming results. If you or someone you know has taken Viagra or its generic equivalent in the past, the following information may be useful.

Reported Adverse Side Effects of Viagra

• Many studies have been conducted on the relationship between Viagra and melanoma. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer, and it derives its name from the fact that it originates in skin cells called melanocytes. These cells are responsible for producing melanin, a chemical that gives the skin color, but they can turn cancerous and spread to other parts of the body. In a prominent research study, medical professionals found that men who take Viagra are more likely to develop not only melanoma but other, less threatening forms of skin cancer as well. There have been many court cases filed by skin cancer patients against the makers of Viagra in the past decade.

• In 2007, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration decided to alter the warning label on Viagra. This was due to the fact that the agency received over 29 reports of hearing loss in Viagra patients of varying ages. It also stated that hearing loss had been reported in Viagra patients during various clinical trials involving the drug’s generic equivalent. Hearing loss was reported in patients suffering from both erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.

• The drug has also been found to increase the risk of heart failure in patients already suffering from various heart problems. Viagra can cause blood platelets to form in the body, and prevent a sufficient amount of blood from reaching the heart. The drug is deemed safe for men who do not suffer from heart conditions, but since 1998, there have been 86 documented cases of heart failure in Viagra patients.
