Car Crashes into Fruit Stand in Jacksonville, Killing Man and Injuring Young Boy

Posted on August 17, 2011

A 42-year-old man and young boy were at a fruit stand on the Southside of Jacksonville Sunday night, August 14, when a BMW plowed into the stand, killing a bystander and injuring the 7-year-old. First Coast News reports the car was traveling south on Powers Avenue when it drifted off the roadway near the intersection of Toledo Road, then hit a pole and began spinning. The BMW hit a parked vehicle and three people before plowing into the fruit stand pinning the bystander and injuring one of the vendors. The bystander was trapped between the BMW and a car behind him and was taken to the hospital where he died. The boy, who a witness said was also pinned between the cars, was listed in stable but critical condition at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center. The 18-year-old driver of the vehicle is facing charges. He was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Our condolences go out to every friend and family member of the man who was killed. Let’s keep the young boy in our prayers for a speedy recovery.

There are many questions that need to be answered here. An accident reconstructionist will need to determine what the driver was doing before losing control of his vehicle. A reputable car accident attorney in Jacksonville would also want to understand the condition of the roadway, the ability of the driver, whether he was traveling too fast, or driving under the influence to determine the at-fault party for this tragic crash.
