AstraZeneca Legal Issues

Posted on February 28, 2016

AstraZeneca is a Swedish-British pharmaceutical manufacturer that ranks as the seventh largest drug company in the world. AstraZeneca manufactures and markets some of the most popular medications in the United States, including Crestor, Symbicort, and Nexium.

Most recently, AstraZeneca has been in the news regarding its type 2 diabetes medication Onglyza (Saxagliptin) and its links to heart disease and pancreatic cancer. A 2013 study in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients who’;ve taken this drug had a significantly increased risk of heart failure and other fatalities. Several personal injury, medical malpractice, and wrongful death lawsuits have been filed.

AstraZeneca is no stranger to legal problems. The company has also faced lawsuits involving the cholesterol lowering medication Crestor, and the antipsychotic medication Seroquel.

And that’s not all. In 2015, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) ordered AstraZeneca to pay $520 million for, as the DOJ put it, “Illegally marketing the anti-psychotic drug Seroquel for uses not approved as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).” The DOJ also claimed that AstraZeneca paid doctors to claim authorship for articles about unapproved uses of Seroquel that were actually written by AstraZeneca company representatives. Further accusations of flying physicians to resorts to “advise” the company also violated federal Anti-Kickback Statutes.

If you have had adverse side effects or lost a loved one as the result of taking an AstraZeneca medication, you need to contact a pharmaceutical litigation attorney. Farah & Farah has represented injury victims for over 35 years.
