Who is At Risk When Using Xarelto?

Risks of Taking Xarelto

Xarelto, the brand name for the anticoagulant rivaroxaban, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. It has become one of the most widely prescribed medications for people who have blood clots, or are at high risk for blood clots. People prescribed Xarelto often suffer from strokes, Atherosclerosis (heart disease), deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs), pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs), atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), high blood pressure, and diabetes. But, reports of severe side effects have brought the safety of Xarelto into question.

If you or a family member has experienced adverse side effects after being prescribed Xarelto, you need to consult a Xarelto injury attorney. Farah & Farah has represented injury victims for over 35 years. We’ve secured our clients substantial compensation for damages.

Xarelto Side Effects

While Xarelto may be an effective treatment for breaking up and preventing blood clots, there is also evidence of some serious and dangerous side effects related to the drug’s use. The Mayo Clinic lists the following as some of the more common side effects reported in association to Xarelto use:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Back pain
  • Bleeding gums
  • Bloody stools
  • Bowel or bladder dysfunction
  • Burning, crawling, itching, numbness, prickling, “pins and needles,” or tingling feelings
  • Coughing up blood
  • Difficulty with breathing or swallowing
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding
  • Leg weakness
  • Nosebleeds
  • Numbness
  • Paralysis
  • Red or dark brown urine
  • Vomiting of blood or material that looks like coffee grounds

People At Risk for Xarelto Injuries

Not everyone who takes Xarelto experiences the above-mentioned side effects. But, certain patients appear to be more at risk for experiencing them. These include people with:

  • Decreased kidney function
  • Liver disorders
  • Haemophilia and other blood clotting disorders
  • Thrombocytopenia (a low number of clotting cells (platelets) in their blood)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Vascular retinopathy (issues with blood vessels at the back of the eye)
  • A history of bleeding in the lungs and coughing up blood
  • Undergoing epidural anaesthesia (spinal injections to numb pain–common in childbirth)
  • An indwelling catheter in their spine for pain relief after surgery
  • Those being treated with medicines that may increase the risk of bleeding (such as non steroidal anti-inflammatory (NAID) drugs like ibuprofen, aspirin, etc.)
  • Those being treated with selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants like fluoxetine (Prozac)
  • Those being treated with anti platelet medications like clopidogrel

As with any medication you are prescribed, it is always a good idea to research the potential risks and side effects of that medication. You should discuss any medication with your doctor.
