Deaths Caused by Xarelto

Xarelto Wrongful Death Claims

When a pharmaceutical company puts a new medication on the market and promotes it to physicians and patients, we trust that it has been tested and deemed safe. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. When a pharmaceutical company sees a growing need for a certain type of drug, they see dollar signs. With an aging population, drug manufacturers know that medications for ailments associated with older patients is a growing and lucrative market. This may sometimes lead drug manufacturers to rush medications to market before they can truly be considered safe. This may have been the case with Xarelto.

If you have lost a loved one who was prescribed Xarelto, you may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit. To find out if you have a viable wrongful death claim, you need to speak to a Xarelto injury attorney. Farah & Farah has a reputation for standing up to pharmaceutical giants and their armies of attorneys. We will guide you through every stage of your case and fight to get you the settlement you deserve.

What is Xarelto and What is it Used to Treat?

Xarelto is the brand name for rivaroxaban, which is manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and co-marketed by Bayer Healthcare. It is an anticoagulant, or blood thinner, commonly prescribed to prevent blood clots and strokes.

Aggressive Marketing Campaign

Xarelto was marketed as a convenient alternative to warfarin, an anticoagulant that has been around since the 1950s that requires dietary restrictions and constant blood monitoring. Xarelto does not. From the beginning, Janssen and Bayer heavily promoted Xarelto to physicians and potential patients. The company enlisted NBA star Chris Bosh, NASCAR driver Brian Vickers, comedian Kevin Nealon and golf legend Arnold Palmer as pitchmen. Xarelto’s current ads boast that it’s the “#1 Blood Thinner in its Class” with “More than 13 million prescriptions in the U.S. and growing.”

Side Effects of Xarelto

Almost immediately, certain side effects were reported by some patients taking Xarelto. The most serious side effects were severe internal bleeding, which can be deadly. Other reported side effects include:

  • Post surgery infections
  • Decreased hemoglobin
  • Hematoma
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the lower limbs

Deaths from Xarelto

At the moment, there is no known total of Xarelto related deaths. German drug regulators have linked Xarelto to 72 deaths in the first eight months of 2013. With the amount of prescriptions for Xarelto being written in America, the death count is potentially huge.

Wrongful Death Damages

If you have lost a loved one who was prescribed Xarelto, you could be entitled to any of the following damages:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Medical bills
  • Pain and suffering of the deceased before they died
  • Loss of future income
  • Loss of future benefits (such as medical benefits and retirement)
  • Loss of companionship, love, affection, guidance, etc.
  • Loss of household duties the deceased performed (such as childcare, repairs, etc.)
