Understanding the Risks of Viagra

By Farah & Farah on October 4, 2016

Erectile dysfunction is a condition that prevents a male from maintaining an erection when stimulated. Over the past few years, several prescription solutions to this problem have been introduced to the market, but few have been as popular as Viagra. Viagra, also known as Sildenafil, is a prescription drug that helps a male to maintain an erection when he is sexually aroused. The drug is also used to treat a condition known as pulmonary arterial hypertension in both men and women. Despite its immense popularity, there have been many adverse side effects associated with the drug.

Viagra’s Mechanism of Action

Viagra is capable of preventing the enzyme phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) from working too quickly. This enzyme is found in the penis and is believed to impact the male body’s ability to maintain an erection. When this enzyme is regulated by Viagra, blood flows to the penis during moments of arousal.

The drug also combats a serious condition known as pulmonary arterial hypertension. The condition occurs when the blood vessels in the lungs constrict, preventing them from circulating a normal amount of blood. To make up for this lack of blood flow, the heart begins to work twice as hard to pump blood and oxygen throughout the body. Viagra causes the blood vessels in the lungs to expand, which allows the lungs to resume blood distribution as usual.

Serious Side Effects of Viagra

In recent years, Viagra has been linked to a plethora of potentially devastating side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has made warning label changes to reflect the possibility of Viagra causing the following health conditions.

• Sudden hearing loss
• Skin cancer
• Stroke
• Loss of vision
• Heart attack

Out of all of these conditions, melanoma garners the most attention, but as of 2007, the FDA documented a total of 29 cases involving Viagra patients and hearing loss. It also received reports of sudden vision loss in Viagra patients. The loss of vision results from a condition known as NAION (non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy), which blocks blood from being distributed to the eyes.
