Q: What is Talcum Powder?

A: Talcum powder is a substance used in Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder and in its well-known product, “Shower to Shower,” with the familiar slogan, “Just a sprinkle a day helps keep odor away.” Talc is the softest mineral known to man, mined from the earth and composed of oxygen, hydrogen, magnesium, and silicon. Because it is smooth and able to absorb moisture, talc has been used in a variety of personal care products, including powders, cosmetics, and supplements.

Q: Has Talcum Powder Been Shown to Cause Cancer?

A: A number of studies, dating back as far as the 1960s, have shown a possible link between talcum powder and cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found a link between ovarian cancer and talcum powder and published its findings in 2010.

In a case study published in the Journal of Epidemiology in May 2016, researchers found an association between genital talc use (for feminine hygiene purposes, on tampons, and on condoms) and epithelial ovarian cancer (tumors in the cells covering the outer surface of the ovaries). This study also found a significant trend with increasing years of talc use.

Q: How Can Talcum Powder Cause Ovarian Cancer?

A: When products containing talcum powder are used for feminine hygiene or on tampons or condoms, tiny talc particles can travel through the vagina, through the fallopian tubes, and into the ovaries. Particles of talc in the ovaries can cause inflammation and irritation, allowing cancer cells to form.

Q: How Is It Determined Whether Ovarian Cancer Was Caused By Talcum Powder?

A: Talc is a mineral that does not break down, and can remain embedded in the ovaries, lymph nodes, or fallopian tubes for years. Pathologists may find talc particles in tissue samples of women with ovarian cancer who have used talcum powder in the genital area.

Q: Was Johnson & Johnson Aware of the Risk of Cancer Associated with Its Products?

A: Attorneys defending Johnson & Johnson in lawsuits against the company insist that years of research found no conclusive evidence linking its powder products to ovarian cancer. On the other hand, plaintiffs suing Johnson & Johnson claim that the company had knowledge of the potential risks (including the findings of the International Agency for Research on Cancer – IARC) and failed to warn consumers of the danger.
