Diabetes Drug Onglyza and Its Side Effects
Details of Onglyza Side Effects
Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem in the United States, made worse by our aging population and the obesity epidemic. As a result, pharmaceutical companies are in a rush to develop newer and more convenient medications to treat the disease. One of the new generation of Type 2 diabetes medications is Onglyza, the brand name for saxagliptin. But, recent studies have linked Onglyza use to heart failure and other medical problems.
If you have suffered side effects, such as heart failure, after you’ve been prescribed Onglyza, or if you’ve lost a loved one who had been prescribed Onglyza, you may be able to pursue compensation for damages suffered by you and your family. To get the compensation you deserve, it’s crucial that you get the representation of a skilled pharmaceutical litigation attorney.
Farah & Farah’s Onglyza side effect lawyers are currently investigating pharmaceutical litigation cases nationwide. At Farah & Farah, we’ve dedicated our practice to standing up for the rights of the injured. Call our offices today at (800) 533-3555.
What is Onglyza?
Onglyza was developed by the Swedish-British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca. It was approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009. Recent studies, including one published in the New England Journal of Medicine (known as the “SAVOR study”), found a 27 percent increase in risk of heart failure among patients taking Onglyza. Other studies have suggested a link between Onglyza use and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. So far, no recall has been issued for Onglyza by the FDA.
Known Side Effects of Onglyza Use
While links between Onglyza use and increased heart failure and pancreatic cancer risk are still being studied, the following are the known side effects associated with Onglyza. You should seek immediate medical attention should you begin experiencing any of these signs of an allergic reaction after taking Onglyza:
- Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of your face, throat, tongue, or lips
Call your doctor immediately if you begin experiencing any of the following symptoms after taking Onglyza:
- Nausea, vomiting, fast heart rate, severe upper stomach pain spreading to your back
- Painful or burning urination
- Swelling of your hands, feet, or ankles
- Bleeding or bruising easily
- Stuffy or runny nose, soar throat, coughing
- Stomach pain
How to File a Claim After Taking Onglyza
Since the link between Onglyza use and heart failure was revealed, many personal injury and wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against AstraZeneca nationwide. Plaintiffs claim that AstraZeneca is liable for failure to warn of potential health risks, fraudulent marketing, and failure to conduct adequate pre-market testing.
