Jacksonville Attorneys Discuss Anti Lock Brakes for Motorcycles

Motorcycle ABS (Antilock Braking System)

Pumping your brakes can be an effective way to maintain control of your vehicle while attempting to slow down on icy or wet road conditions. It is not necessary, however, to pump your brakes if you have anti-lock brakes. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are now standard in most passenger vehicles, but they are not installed on all motorcycles. If you ride, take a moment to determine if your vehicle has ABS because it can have a significant impact on your ability to handle emergency situations.

ABS for Motorcycles

Emergency braking can be extremely dangerous for motorcyclists. It is common for brakes on motorcycles to lock up completely when there is too much pressure on one side of the motorcycle. When the wheels of a motorcycle lock up during emergency braking, the bike and the driver will go down. When, however, a motorcycle has anti-lock brakes, emergency stopping is less treacherous. ABS can sense wheel rotation. So, when the wheel is about to lock, the brake pressure will begin to pulse in order to prevent the wheel from locking. As long as the wheel does not lock, the rider should be able to keep the motorcycle upright and straight.

Check Your Motorcycle

You may assume that your new motorcycle has ABS, but that may not be the case. If your motorcycle is an older model, or if it was originally sold outside the United States, there is a chance that it does not have ABS. The European Commission only passed legislation in 2012 making motorcycle ABS standard, and it only goes into effect in the year 2016. There are even some bikes in the United States that do not have ABS standard.

When Accidents Happen

There has been enough research done about how brakes work in emergency situations that it is irresponsible, at this point, to manufacture motorcycles without anti-lock brake systems. Furthermore, it is a form of negligence to fail to inform consumers when motorcycles do not have ABS. If the motorcycle wheels lock and a rider is ejected, it is important that a complete inspection of the vehicle takes place. Would the rider have crashed if the vehicle had ABS? Was the rider aware that his or her vehicle did not have anti-lock brakes? There are many questions that should be asked by a skilled crash site investigator.

Understanding Your Rights in Florida

Anyone who has suffered a loss in a motorcycle crash would be well advised to obtain more information about his or her legal options from a qualified Jacksonville motorcycle accident lawyer. If it is clear that ABS could have prevented the collision, it may be possible to file a claim against the motorcycle manufacturer. Negligent manufacturers can be held accountable for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, loss of earning capacity and other related damages. If the victim did not survive the crash, support may also be available for funeral expenses, lost future wages, and pain and suffering if the victim’s family chooses to file a wrongful death claim. Civil litigation is often the only way to receive fair and full compensation in such cases.
